October 2008 Entries

It's October 31st -- the unofficial but very OFFICIAL non-holiday called Halloween.  First called "hallows eve" - a devlish response to "All Saints Day" -- but now as overtaken us with a profit generated (cards, costumes and candy) night of mischief!  Beyond the gjost and gouls, I am scared by a number of other devilish possibilities in the near future. Try these frighting ideas on for size while you munch on a bite size bag of M&M's....

1. The lost of a free market, capitalistic society where every person if they take personal responsibility will be able to propser and make something OF and FOR themselves.\

2. The forcing of churches to perform or allow homosexual marriages to occur in their churches.

3. The reversing of ground gained through pro life efforts in the last 20 years by a agenda that "calls abortion a moral issue" (quoted from Believers for Barack pamphlet).

4. The greater and most intrusive government involvement in the affairs of common citizens through taxation and socialistic dependance of the people on government programs.

5. The loss of global respect of our military power which has proven to be a detoriate.

6. The escalation of union influence in business (think about this - auto makers, airlines and education are three failing and declining inductries in America -- all three have the common link of being overtaken by union influence).

7. The further untrustworthy reporting by media that has lost its ability to report without bias and the effort to silence those media outlet that attempt to bring forth the other side politic debate or balance the biased media (Fairness Doctrine gone wild!).

8. The turning our back on the nation of Israel, which will bring about God's quick judgement that the Bible speaks of when it states - that God would bless those who blesses His people.

9. The silencing of pastors from speaking the truth of God's word and calling it "hate speech." (Ask Canada about there law prohibiting ministers to preach messages about homosexuality as an abomination as the Bible calls it)

10. The further corrupt and uncheck abuses of the election system and the outright ignoring of liberal politicians to bring integrity into the electoric by passing a comprehensive voting identification process nationwide.

There you have it - Jamie's top ten things more frightening then Halloween mischief...the problem with my list it does not disappear after tonight!

Ray Pritchard is one of my favorite boggers. A matter of fact, I am bogging today because of his encouragement.  Recently, he posted a a short but helpfu thought on the filling of the Spirit....blessings!

Last week I sent this sermon out via email to over 5000 people. Since then I’ve revised the sermon a bit and added two new sections—one on the role emotions should play in the filling of the Holy Spirit and one on the fact that “Be filled with the Spirit” in Ephesians 5:18 is a plural command. Here’s the new section on the plural command.
After I sent out the sermon, two friends (one in Chicago, one in Montreal) called my attention to the fact that this is a plural command, as if Paul were saying, “Let each and every one of you be filled with the Spirit.” On one hand, that means the command is for every Christian. God intends—and desires—that all his children be filled with the Holy Spirit. My friends—who wrote independently of each other—both pointed out that there is a sense in which this is also a corporate command. The church as a church is to be filled with the Holy Spirit. That is, the filling of the Spirit is not something for my own personal edification. God’s Spirit imparts life-giving power that transforms the church from a social club or a religious gathering into a living body of Christ. We can see that clearly in the verses that follow: Speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs (v. 19).
Submitting to one another out of reverence for Christ (v. 21). I am to be filled with the Spirit—but I am not to be filled alone. When the Holy Spirit fills us one by one, our corporate life will be transformed. Perhaps this one factor accounts for the difference between a church that is “alive” and a church that is “dead.” Both churches have the same Bible, the same rituals, they may sing the same songs, they may even have the same programs and the same schedule of services. Outwardly they may look very much alike. But one is alive.
The other is dead. What makes the difference? The Holy Spirit! So we need this doctrine of the filling of the Spirit not simply for ourselves but for the reformation and revival of local churches everywhere.

Dear Church Family:

This coming general election will be my seventh presidential election for which I will have the privilege of voting. There is nothing I value more as a citizen of this wonderful nation than the right and awesome responsibility of electing a president. I will tell you that during these 28 years of voting, some of the people I voted for lost, but some won. Of the ones that were victorious in the election, I was disappointed with some of their policies and decisions. I have been a verbal critic of those for whom I voted when their decisions have been less than stellar. I say that so you understand that I view these issues objectively and without overt bias. It is clear to me that our system of electing and our form of government is not perfect, but when it comes to earthly governance it has been very fruitful and certainly has allowed democracy and liberty to reign. That is why I believe every citizen, especially believers, need to prayerfully, intellectually, and diligently take this responsibility very serious.

As we approach November 4th, I feel compelled to share some thoughts on the election and how I make a decision based on godly wisdom. More times than not, I have cast my Presidential vote for the “lesser of two evils.” That is a terrible thing to admit but I have only cast my vote wholeheartedly without reservations twice. That means I did not fully agree with many of the policies and ideas of a candidate for whom I voted. So the question begs to be asked – “What are some principles or factors that lead me to decide who to vote for especially when I am conflicted about certain ideas and policies?” In true preacher mode I have three points and they’re alliterated….

1.      Core Principles of Government
Historically, our nation has thrived because of values and principles at its core – three to be exact. The first and foremost is the need for personal responsibility. A nation is doomed when the individual is not challenged with taking responsibility for his life, livelihood, and discipline. When people are allowed or even rewarded for being irresponsible it sets into motion an unhealthy environment. Having visited Macedonia (a former communist country), we can clearly see the negative and life-threatening effects of a nation that has been stripped of the value of taking personal responsibility. When a government creates systems whereby people are no longer encouraged towards personal responsibility it results in a nation waiting to “eat its own.”

Second, our nation and its virtue are based on a country that has encouraged and celebrated a charitable spirit; that is, the people themselves become the source and solution to the woes of its community. As a matter of fact, our country has always rewarded those who demonstrate charity. America is one of a few nations that gives tax credit to people who give to charitable efforts. The reason this is important is that a charitable spirit is the glue that holds our community together. Our choice to help others proves our moral virtue. When the government takes away our privilege to be charitable and becomes the only source of solving problems, that spirit is extinguished.

Third, and finally, we must hold to the tradition of government being limited in the affairs of men. Yes, we need some regulations. Yes, we need laws to be enforced. But, as Romans 13 affirms, government is there to protect the law-abider and punish the evil-doer. When there is more government, it means there are more taxes. More taxes limit a person from exercising their personal initiative and responsibility and exercising their charitable spirit. In recent days I have heard people respond that “evil-doers” are corrupting our system of government. While I partly agree, the fact is government and laws can never legislate morality.

So when I go to the ballot box I want to support the candidate who will protect these essential values of a healthy nation – the priority of personal responsibility, the rewarding of a charitable spirit, and the limited view of government intervention into the lives of people.

2.      Character of the Candidate
Obviously, it would be wonderful to have a thoroughly born-again, growing, mature believer as a President. However, we are not looking to establish a theocracy; we are looking to find a capable, quality person to manage and govern an earthly, human institution. Additionally, I recognize that the “best of men (or women) are men at best.” We are all sinners and so this person will not be perfect. However, I need to find someone who holds my values and keeps company with those of similar values. 2 Corinthians tells me “bad company corrupts morals.” I believe that. A person’s record on voting, accomplishments they have done, and the longevity of their service all play a role in determining their character. I do not just “take their word.” When someone says to me they are a “committed Christian,” I am responsible to determine what that means. I think all of us over the years have seen the error of supporting those who said those words. One other thought about character. Consistency proves character. What a person said in one venue should be the same in another. What a person voted for at one time should be consistent in the future. Can candidates change positions? Yes. But then let them share why and give their rationale. Where I am most jaded in the political process is in the realization that all politicians will say what they need to get elected. Integrity in words, policies, positions, and speeches; who advises them; and who has influenced them over the years all speak to character.

3.      Consistency with Biblical Truth
My final determinate for voting is to examine a candidate’s policies and position and run them through what I will call the “Bible Test.” The Bible cannot give us a complete litmus test concerning a party platform; however, on issues to which the Bible speaks, we are compelled as believers to take note and fall on the side of the Bible, especially when those positions are crystal clear. Recently I dialogued with a campaign staffer concerning her candidate’s positions. I asked her if these were opinions or based on truth. I had to explain to her what I meant, which was not a good sign. Nevertheless, I was able to show her that her candidate’s beliefs were basically situational ethics combined with personal opinion and not based on the truths of God’s Word. She was silent. On issues of life, such as abortion, it is not a matter of how emotionally difficult that decision is on a woman. The fact is God’s Word has determined that murder is wrong. Murder is defined as “anyone who takes another life unjustly.”  We know that to be true because the Bible tells us and God determined it. That is our truth source. Who, then, should be consulted on determining when life begins? The same one to whom we go to determine when life ends – God. The Bible states that God wove us in our mother’s womb before our parents even knew there was life growing inside of the woman. Therefore anyone who aborts a baby is taking a life – it is clearly wrong.  The important aspect of that discussion on a pro-life position is not the conclusion, but how you formed that position. It was based on a belief that my moral decisions better be tied to an absolute truth source – true truth. Not ideas, feelings, or opinions. Not assumptions on how the woman with an unwanted pregnancy is feeling; that is situational ethics and it does not support the value of personal responsibility. And so for all of us as believers we must take a candidate’s platform and run it through the “Bible Test.”

So when you hold to some basic but nodal convictions on core principles that make a healthy nation; you examine as best as you can a candidate’s character and those things that help us understand his moral compass; and when you run a candidate’s policies and platform through a lens of scriptural consistency, you will have wisdom to determine how to vote.

There is one more aspect of this journey to choosing a candidate, and it is probably the most important: you must pray. I would call us all to prayer. Pray for wisdom. Pray for our nation. Pray for God’s revealing light to shine on this process; pray for integrity in the voting; pray for our resolve to deal in righteousness and godliness whatever the outcome may be; and finally pray that we will realize that this is not our permanent home, but we long for a city, the City of God, where there will be a “King of Kings, and Lord of Lords” and He will rule with a righteous hand over all the affairs of heaven and earth.

Prayerfully and respectfully,

Pastor Jamie

We have assembed a word class group of experienced economic practioners.  Here is the buletin expaining the forum....HOPE YOU WILL COME!!!!

Financial Forum this SUNDAY!

I am so excited about this coming Sunday and the incredible opportunity we have as a church to listen to some highly qualified men who are dealing with the present financial crisis. We have assembled a panel that will be able to inform us and answer questions on issues concerning: how did we get in this mess, what exactly is broken, is my money safe in the bank, what will happen to my retirement, how can we get out of this, and what should I be looking at in my own financial world. These men are not here to offer financial advice but to inform us on a subject that might seem very confusing. The panel is comprised of:

Robert Crema is the President of Acer Investment Group. Bob has been in the financial services business since 1969. He began as a runner on Wall Street and worked his way up the fiduciary business ladder until he started his own brokerage firm in 1982. He specializes as an investment advisor for institutional clients with usually one billion dollars under management. He also deals heavily in foreign markets and understands how a global economy works.

Ron Joelson is presently a Managing Director at JP Morgan Chase, responsible for JP Morgan's relationships with large insurance companies and their investment organizations. Prior to joining JP Morgan in 2007, Ron was head of asset liability and risk management at Prudential Financial, where he also was their chief investment officer. In December, Ron will be the CIO of Genworth Financial, where he will be responsible for $75 billion of assets under management and an investment organization of over 200 professionals. He has extensive experience managing a wide range of assets.

John Osborne is our church’s banker. He is the manager of Susquehanna Bank’s Willow Street branch. He began his banking career at the Quarryville office of Lancaster County Farmers in the bookkeeping department in 1965. After holding positions as a teller, head teller, collection dept. unit manager, assistant branch manager, and branch manager, he retired from First Union Bank in 1999.  Since then he has worked as assistant vice president/branch manager of the Susquehanna Bank in Willow Street, PA. John is a member of Calvary Monument Bible Church. John’s son, Tim, and his family attend Oak Hill Fellowship.

Chris Kerneris a member at NewSong. He is Region Vice-President with Primerica Financial Services. He deals primarily with life insurance, estate planning, debt reduction, and consolidation of credit. He brings to the forum 14 years of experience helping families understand what matters most…."to be properly protected, debt free, and financially independent.”

Please make an effort to attend either 9AM or 11AM SOD in the gym! Invite a friend…..AND don’t skip out of worship, as I will continue my series – “Signs of Life: The Serving Life.”

Are you worried and angered at the loss of integrity in the voting process in America?

Recent days we have been made aware of the massive afford to corrupt the ballot  box in the US.  Many legislators have attempted to put forth laws to mandate a voter identification system, but liberal elements have thwarted those efforts. Why would some not want to assure that our electoral process is not complete upright?

Obviously the lack of time and will to change the situation is against those of us concerned. However we can do something.  I am suggesting to all patriotic Americans to make a statement this coming election day. Voluntarily when you go to the polls to cast your vote – HOLD UP YOUR DRIVER’S LICENCSE, SOCIAL SECURITY CARD OR PASSPORT and then proudly announce to the poll workers who you are and that you have valid and legal identification. We believe that if law abiding citizens who are legally registered will do this, it will turn the light on those who try to creep into our election process and mar the integrity of the process.

CAN YOU JUST IMAGINE WHAT NEXT TUESDAY WOULD LOOK LIKE IF A FEW MILLION VOTERS MADE A BOLD STATEMENT THAT WE WANT INTEGRITY PUT BACK INTO THIS PRECIOUS PRIVILEDGE OF VOTING?

We do not have a lot of time, so I need your help…..could you forward this message to as many people as possible in your address book?  Will you encourage people to talk about this at work, in their homes, school and church?  Ask your pastor to say something in church – he can do that – he is not endorsing a candidate – but encouraging a grass root effort to restore the veracity of voting!

Washington DC is failing us….we need to stand up and make our wishes known!

Thanks

Jamie Mitchell

Protect the Vote

Histor tells us that when evil dictators of the past wanted to overtake a society and nation they use a four fold plan that worked every time. In each historical account of this overtaking whether it was Marx, Napolean, Hilter or any other evil empire there was always these four linchpins of power movement:

1. Control the media. In the book the Prince by Macevalleni, he points out the Napolean was the first to understand that you must use the media of the day, which is supposed to be unbias to deceive the public. Tell a lie enough and people will accept it as true.

2. Corrupt the election process. When the ballot box is no longer protected and integrity is throw out of the process, we are no longer electing the person of the people's choice but the one who can manipulate the electoric.

3. Convince the people that governmant and social programs can solve problem. Make the people dependant on the government. Say thing like the government knows best; the government will take care of you; the government will provide for your every need - cradle to grave -- you take away the people's desire to help themselves. You throw out the two personal qualities that drive a healthy nation - personal responsibility and personal initiative.

4. Clergy is silenced. The greatest enemy to an evil empire or dictator is the Spirit empower, only God fearing, authoritatively preaching man of God. Armed with the Bible and speaking to the hearts of the people, pastors can turn back any evil and unite a nation to overthrow evil. This means that if overthrow is going to happen -- clergy must be silenced!

Now with that explanation....are you concerned about where we are at this election year? Is not the media in the back pocket of one party and no longer bias. Is not the election process integrity been corrupted by the fact of fraudulent registrations? have you ever thought why there is such a resistence to voter identification? How about socializing of all solutions -- and they portray themselves as compassionate and caring and fair! Finally, it is obvious to this pastor that my ability to speak forthright without some penalty is becoming more and more a reality.

Be concerned. be very concerned!

I am reminded of what happened in Europe when Hilter rose to power. Well intentioned and most time cowardly pastors were silent when they saw Jews being dragged off to prisoner camps.  They believed that it could never happen to them. How wrong they were. Pastors like Bonhoffer were a chosen few who rose to the occassion and stood up against the godless facsism of his day. But it was too little too late. Past of the problem was that many we duped by Hitler's hollow promises for a better day. He promised that the government would be able to care for all their needs. He lied. and their willingness to accept what he was offering was like cheese to the mouse - the trap was set and they were caught!

We are facing similar days. Politicians are promising paradise and peace and government given prosperity. They are wearing away personal rsponsibility and the need for personal initiative. Those two qualities is the heart and soul of America. We must not forget history and not make the mistake that "it will be different" this time around! As believers we must speak up and point out the historical -- not the hystrerical -- slippery slope that is occuring this election season.

This week I received a form letter from Barry Lynn president of "Americans United for the Separation of Church and State." The attempt to stop churches to influence the culture and political dealings in America. they are terribly liberal and they work under the false notion of being concerned with keeping religion pure.  They are not born again and they are really attempting to marginalize true believers.  In response I wrote the following editorial to the Intell newspaper:

October 21, 2008
Dear Editor:
As a pastor, I have been waiting for my quad-annual “extortion-like” letter from Barry Lynn and his anti-God, anti-Christ, anti-Church organization – Americans United for the Separation of Church and State. Well, it arrived yesterday.  In his mass-produced letter to pastors, Lynn sends his veiled threat to clergy to cease from any political involvement in this year’s election, whereby we might use our influence to encourage people to vote a certain way.  Obviously, pastors are well-informed that churches, because of their tax-exempt status, are restricted from endorsement of any candidates.  However, there is an abusive attempt to apply this restriction personally upon pastors and to silence ministers from explaining what the Bible says about certain issues that candidates hold.  It is the task of a pastor to rightly divide the Scriptures and assist parishioners to develop Biblically sound convictions that should direct their decisions (i.e. voting decisions). When we highlight clear violations in the Bible where candidates are in conflict, Lynn and the rest of his AUSCS cronies cry foul and want the IRS to take away our tax favorable status.  This is a sophisticated way of silencing the Bible and the preachers called to proclaim the truths of God’s Word.
What is troubling is that this pressure is usually applied to more conservative pastors and churches who are more likely to support positions on pro-life, protection of traditional marriage, and limited government, especially concerning welfare and selection of judges. What is interesting is that the 501c3 organizations or churches that are pro-abortion and pro- gay marriage, promote socialistic forms of welfare, and defend “living constitutional” Supreme Court nomination positions usually get a pass and are not viewed as IRS violators.  Isn’t that odd?
During this past primary season, a well-known, influential pastor in our city wrote an article in the Intell on his decision to vote for Obama.  Did anyone from AUSCS or the IRS question that endorsement?  Did any separation of church and state watch dog call the Intell and want that removed? Did that pastor get called on the carpet by the IRS?  Unlikely!  There is a frightening movement afoot in our country to silence the clergy but only those who consistently point out when candidates are not in step with the Bible. There is a fear among the liberal element in our country that, if clergy speak authoritatively from the Scriptures, we may turn the light on the morally-depraved positions of some candidates and turn voters away.  Who knows? Voters may begin to think righteously on Election Day when they cast their ballot and not just politically, financially, racially, or self-servingly? How novel. Speaking to the moral conscience of a person is so threatening to people like Lynn and other liberals that they must attempt to silence pastors like me.  It won’t happen! I call on all pastors to preach authoritatively from the Bible on what God says about the issues of the day and turn God’s light on each of the candidates who espouse positions that are in conflict with God and then let God’s spirit work in the hearts of men and women.
Just a little history lesson...when the media is no longer without bias (look at this election season coverage), when the election process is no longer trustworthy (can you spell ACORN?), and when socialistic agendas are pursued as an answer to a nation’s problems (bailout anyone?) – the only thing left is to silence the clergy and to repeat the frightening steps that will usher in fascism and communism.

Sorry - faithful blogites -- I have been a little overwhelemed these past few weeks. Since our big Anniversary celebration, i have been catching up in the office, with counseling and then getting the new ministry year uop and running!  Here are some of the stuff I have been up to the last two week....

1. Anniversay weekend ended, but the small groups and mentoring groups were in full flight.  I am teaching a men;s mentoring group called Foundations of Leadership.  It is one of my favorite classes/cources that I teach -- primarily because i know that it will have astonishing affects on the partcipants -- it always does.

2. I have been having discussions with some facility people about locating a place for our offices off the church site.  We are ok for now -- but by next spring we will be hurting for children's and adult class space.  The removal of the offices will really help.  We did some creative construction and was able to capture two new classrooms -- outstanding.

3. I have had a lot of conversations about the economic condition in America and how it is effect our people. Fortunately we do not have a lot of people who play the stock Market but still retirement plans have been hurt and so there is a number of people stressed.  We have not seen it affect the church giving situation but my guess is that by January it will!

4. On October 5 we hosted location politicians and those running for office. It was outstanding!  I spoke on Zaccheus and we gave each person a copy of 10 Choices by James MacDonald.

5 Talking about James -- our pastors went out the the Straight Up Conference in Chicago -- it was awesome. What a blessing. john MacArthur, CJ Mahaney, Joe Stowell...unbelieveable worship!  What a spiritually renewing two days.

6. We got back a had a number of major crisis slam us!  We went from spiritual highs to the reality of ministry lows. We got thru but it tough!

7. Finally I launched my new sermon series - Signs of Life - reflecting the Son's Lif in Ours -- I spoke of the foundations of that kind of life - Love God and Love people.  It was well received.

Today I am home nursing a sore back -- i think the matress is shot-  BAck to the grind tomorrow!  JM
